David Austin, almost half a century ago, set out to restore a number of old rose qualities to garden roses: old rose form, fragrance, shrubbiness, and the vigor and good health of the best old roses. This, it turned out, was a tall task. Measured by the popularity of David Austin's roses he has had an astonishing measure of success. Measured against some theoretical ideal, there are perhaps, opportunities for more improvements in areas of shrubbiness and health. And some of us will never get enough fine fragrance.
The list below includes a number of roses bred by Austin and introduced as English Roses, one or two bred by others that he has classified in this group, and a few bred by other breeders aiming - if not for the identical set of qualities, then at roughly the same market. It may be helpful to keep in mind the old saw 'you don't get something for nothing.' Eglantyne is almost unconditionally healthy but it is not extremely fragrant. Brother Cadfael produces huge, fragrant blooms, but can be parsimonious with them. Constance Spry makes big, fragrant flowers on a vigorous plant, but will host downy mildew and does not repeat. And so on. The situation is neither much better nor much worse with this class than with many others; but Austin gives us many choices for which we are very thankful.
