Pernet-Ducher bred roses at the end of the ninteenth cetnury. His work was primarily with hybrid teas and their climbers. He gets the credit and the blame for bringing Rosa foetida's bright yellow color into the hybrid tea rose line and for bringing with it that rose's weakness for black spot. The introduction was Soleil d'Or and it is loved for its color and good health. But its descendents have sometimes been less fortunate. It has taken almost a century for rosedom to recover from the damage. But yellow will occasionally crop up in roses today without that problem. And once this is a regular occurrance, it seems that we wil have no choice but to forgive the breeder for his action.
Le Reve, when grown in warm climates is one of the biggest, most vigorous, and glorious true yellow climbers. Growers in England prefer Lawrence Johnston. Madame Caroline Testout (pictured) may grow slowly and get a little fungal disease, but the rose is steady and its blossoms have a wonderful delicacy.
