Ralph Moore did not invent the miniature rose; but he transformed it from a novelty into a business. He has introduced many dozens of miniature cultivars, only a small fraction of which is listed below. Perhaps his most famous mini is Rise 'n' Shine, a kind of miniature rose echo of the early morning wake-up call Moore and other children across the midwest would have heard each day in the days of his youth. Magic Carrousel is another very popular and highly rated miniature with pink-edged white flowers.
I have planted Red Cascade at the feet of two cedars where they compete with the trees for food and water and receive just a bit too much shade. Instead of reaching their six foot height, they have grown to waist high and look quite good when in bloom in spring. I have seen Judy Fischer growing in a local municipal garden where it makes large numbers of fairly large miniature flowers. It's a very different look, and very good. In a color sense, Earthquake is a very novel rose, being boldly blotched with red, yellow and creamy white. Green ice is more novel yet being one of the few roses extant to be pale green. It's not a look everyone will embrace, but it could be very effective with mauve or yellow; or for the really bold person who wishes to try both mauve and yellow in the same area.
Not all of Moore's good roses are minis. He introduced Topaz Jewel as a darker yellow flowered rugosa compared to Agnes. It is not completely free of disease, but many gardeners are quite fond of it. Linda Campbell is a red flowered rugosa of his creation that many gardeners grow. Moore also produced from Playboy two floribundas: Playgirl and Playtime. The former is a mauve rose that has a wide following. The latter is vermilion and is rarely encountered.
