Shell Pink is generally achieved in roses when there is some yellow and some red pigment produced - but not a lot of either. The color can be soft, feminine, delicious; or it can look washed out and wimpy. Sometimes the line between these is very narrow. Shell pink, because it is so light will make you imagine that it goes with everything; but it really only sings brightly when paired with a few other colors. It can look pretty good with pale apricots, pale pinks, and white. Sometimes buff will work. Copper and salmon can work better. There are a number of shades of coral that look very good with it. Most pinks and purples are too cool. Most reds are too dark, most yellows are too yellow.
Pictured is Ambridge Rose which has some of the finest perfume to be found in roses, and it is a fragrance perfectly matched to the color of the rose. Souvenir de la Malmaison was named by a Russian count in honor of Empress Josephine's rose garden and it remains the standard against which roses of this color are judged.
