The list of orange roses is exceedingly short. And many of the roses on it probably belong in another color category. Orange is a bright and cheery color which, curiously, can work well with more colors than one might expect. There are, for instance, many warm purples that light up next to orange. It stands up to golds, and complements apricots and buffs. It can even be mixed nicely with an assertive pink, a warm pink, rose, or cerise. But the orange in roses will sometimes fade or change color. And when this happens, things are not always as we would wish. Still, orange is color worthy of consideration.
In my own garden I grow Fred Loads. The plant is healthy, but after six years I am undecided; the flowers are short lived and I am not sure I even like them. I will have to peg the rose to see whether I can get it to bear roses along its canes rather than at the tips. I have seen Marina well grown in a local garden where it provides plenty of color. Looping impressed me at Roseraie de l'Hay and it did well enough in my own garden until it succumbed in a lawn mower accident.
