Mauve can get mixed reviews as a rose color. Sometimes its tonal value gets too close to that of the green leaves this can lead to a strange sense of semi-confusion, especially on roses that hold the flowers close to foliage. This is a complaint I have of Veilchenblau. Some purplish- mauve roses grow on plants with slightly yellowish leaves in which case the flowers clash with the foliage. In such cases there is little hope of the rose being a pretty garden plant. It is true of a number of roses in this group that the colors are especially unstable. In the case of seven sisters, the rose is named for its vast collection of different colored roses ranging from white and pink through lilac and mauve.
When mauve is integrated into a garden of pinks, roses, whites, buffs, and crimsons, it fills out and balances the spectrum a little. In this sense it has quite a bit of use. As with any rose, sometimes we plant a particular mauve rose just because we like it. This might be the case for Playgirl whose five petalled flowers frame nicely contrasting stamens. One might also try growing Old Port whose chaliced flowers are named for the richly colored fluid a goblet of the same shape might contain. It is not much grown and it is presumably for its less than stellar health. At the other end of the health spectrum is Great Western which I have set in six inches of impoverished clay on top of limestone. In this challenging location it has slowly built up to five feet tall and it produces prodigous numbers of very fragrant flowers once each year.
The pictured rose is Moon Shadow whose soft violet tones and gentle curves give it a kind of regal presence in the garden.
