When Whiskey Mac was introduced it was among a number of roses named for distilled spirits. The spirit distilled into these roses was that of gold. And this they captured well. Yet many gold colored roses, especially the brightly colored ones, tend to grow weakly and/or they are ravished by disease. These roses have the allure of gold; but some gardeners - especially those who just want to plant roses and enjoy them may find that when it comes to roses all that glitters is not gold.
Pictured is Whiskey Mac growing in a garden in San Jose. A favorite feature of the rose is how the purplish foliage so nicely complements the flowers. When this color category was conceived, it was with this rose in mind. Gold Medal is more yellow; and Golden Celebration is frequently less saturated.
