Chrome yellow is arguably the brightest color one can use for flowers in the garden. There are lots of reasons to be afraid of this color, because it will frequently not work very well with most other rose colors except scarlet, vermilion and red. But if one is planting a garden without roses in traditional rosy colors, chrome yellow can be a great addition. Thus it is perfectly suited for plants that serve as specimen plants. Chrome yellow shows up brilliantly against dark green foliage, and any garden can benefit from having a spot dedicated to creating just this effect.

Chrome yellow arrives in roses thanks to R. foetida. The consequence is that chrome yellow roses have frequently fallen prey to that ancestor's weaknesses. One weakness is a susceptibility to black spot. Another is spindly growth. Some headway in mitigating these problems has been made through the century since R. foetida was introduced into rose breeding; but the number of outstandingly healthy, vigorous, and robust chrome yellow roses remains vanishingly small. Those living in places where fungal disease is a problem may not find any roses on this list to be suitable. Perhaps some of Dr. Brownell's introductions will be suitable. They are available from Jung Seed Co; but there is not a lot of other published information on them.
