Comments Arguably, Max Graf is more important as a landmark in rose breeding or as breeding stock for roses than it is as a garden rose. It gave rise to R. kordesii which was used extensively by Kordes in breeding cold hardy and vigorous roses for cooler European climates. That said, it makes a pretty good ground cover, tolerating shade and producing lots of fragrant flowers. And its unique hybrid heritage makes it extremely vigorous and healthy, especially in coolish, dampish weather areas of northern Europe and the Northeastern US.
