Comments Buds open a pale yellow. Then they begin to flush with red pigment turning apricot or pink, depending on how quickly the yellow pigment fades. Finally, they darken to red or crimson. There is good consonance between the colors, making the plant look festive like a carnival or masque. The colors and the succession of colors are so like that of the China rose Mutabilis that one might expect a closer relationship between them. There is a climbing sport identical in every other way. This was a very popular rose for decades; and it still has its share of ardent fans.
