Comments Hot Cocoa is a rose with hoards of serious fans. Evidently this cold hardy plant is almost unconditionally vigorous and healthy. This vigor allows it to crank out flowers with an assembly-line kind of regularity. Its flowers start out in bud a deep and delicious dark russet. As they open they can approach a weird mix of brown and orange. A grayish magenta intensifies as the rose ages, sometimes approaching the color of concrete. When this rose is perfect, it looks exotic and lovely. But the petals also dry out easily, and when this happens the flowers look a mess. It's got to be a fun rose when it works, probably consorting with bright yellow and orange flowering plants better than most roses can. But it does require careful placement and some attention to deadheading to keep it attractive.
