Comments A compact rugosa shrub that is one of the few hybrid rugosas that might actually be an unequivocal improvement on the species. It is nicely branched, and it blooms prolifically. As is true of most rugosas, it will do well on slightly poor sandy soils; and it neither needs nor responds well to pruning. It is among the least affected by disease of any rose, and among the most cold hardy. If there is a rose that might tolerate zone 2 winters, this might be it. If so, the name is ironic since Hudson died of cold in zone 2 searching for the northwest passage. It is a fitting tribute; and global warming will soon succeed where Hudson failed.
