Comments In the 1990's Altissimo made nearly everyone's list of top 25 roses. The flowers are the purest shade of red, single, and large enough that they never fail to wow. In coolish weather a single bloom may open and look good on the plant for as long as two weeks. Its name means "highest" but it is only just tall enough to be thought of as a climber. In fact, it is probably not tall enough to train on an arch. The one I planted this spring grew a total of three inches this year given pretty good care. Despite its "shortcoming" it is widely grown and loved.
