Comments "Regarded by some rosarians as the best of the mauve large-flowered roses," wrote Sterling Macoboy in the mid 1980's. Charles de Gaulle's flowers range the gamut from lilac through mauve. Set beside any number of "blue" roses, this one will have less red pigment than most. The petals are thin and the fragrance is strong. But this same texture means that in blistering hot sun they can dessicate easily; and in wet weather they will ball. Sometimes Lagerfeld, Fragrant Plum, Moon Shadow, Blue Moon, Royal Amethyst, or Shi-Un might be better choices, perhaps.
