Comments Souvenir de la Malmaison is part of the legacy of Empress Josephine's garden and has been for a very long time a favorite rose of those who can grow it. It has a reputation for making big fragrant flowers on a nice shrub. I have tried growing it in zones 6, 7, and 8 and it has always died within minutes of touching garden soil, suggesting a certain lack of robustness when facing mild adversity. Similarly, advice at HMF is "not to prune this rose too heavily -- it doean't like it." It is a bourbon rose, so we must expect some problems with blackspot and perhaps other diseases. Those who live in zone 8 who have warm but not hot summers and who enjoy dry air but constantly moist and fertile soil are likely to be delighted with this rose.
