Every year at Colonial Park Rose Gardens I am impressed by the masses of little pale orange flowers it produces. The part it plays in this rose garden is like the cello. The hybrid teas get the melody. And the huge shrubs like Highdownensis play the base lines. Long lines of polyanthas do the trilling picolo parts. The way we define its role is as 'background' and 'something in between.' But the thing that impresses me about this rose is that of the roses in this park, this one is far and away the prettiest shrub. I'm afraid that makes it least rose-like and may doom it to obscurity. I hope otherwise. |
