From the popularity of America and from its ARS rating of 8.5 one might gather that America was quite a stunning rose. It is surely among the best bred in the US in the last 50 years: but then there was almost no effort in this time to breed climbers. Yet the fact that it was saved from the mulch-heap by the chief breeder in an organization that had no room for roses other than HT's says much for it.
The solitary bloom on the one in Berkeley rose garden was not quite so bright and cheery as this photo of it suggests. Whatever the color, this is a rare one among climbers, and this is a rose to be cherished. |
