Its flowers are relatively large and deliciously fragrant. It makes a large shrub 7 ft high by almost as much across. Passed down from person to person for the better part of a millennium, chances are it will outlast 99.4% of the roses bred in the last 50 years. Alba Semi-Plena is not quite so well branched or densely foliaged as other Albas, but it is ample in these qualities. It's dark grayish green foliage is the perfect foil to the flowers, and the ideal backdrop for other flowering plants. ARS members rate Semi-Plena 9.0, and the Royal Horticultural Society bestowed on it the Award of Garden Merit. It's shown here thriving in afternoon shade with Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' and rosa 'Knock Out.' |
